On our last field trip to Crater Lake I ask the students to bring a water bottle, snack and lunch with us. It is almost a three-hour bus ride to the lake, and by the time we get there, the kids are ready to move, and eat! As the students sat on the edge of the wall overlooking the lake, I took the opportunity to look and see what they were eating.
I was pleased to see that there was a wide assortment of fruits and vegetables, wraps with lean meat and water in reusable, plastic free containers. On the other hand, there were many pre-packaged, overly processed and overly caloried drinks. I know the convenience of purchasing a pre-packaged lunch. But the cost and level of packaging and additives outweighs the convenience.
Along with teaching, I have the pleasure of being one of the track coaches at the high school. I coach the sprinters, and our season runs from January through May. Part of my charge is to coach young athletes on nutrition. One of the first things I mention is the overuse of sports drinks. Even when working out hard on a daily basis, I only let my athletes drink these sports drinks when they are cut in half with water.
During our field trip I watched many students drink entire containers of sports drinks, while expelling very little energy. In fact, my recovery drink of choice for my athletes is chocolate milk! If you get a chance, check out this website

Another fun little video is the new Chipotle restaurant video. I am not promoting Chipotle, but the video brings up some interesting thoughts on our corporate food industry.
