For the past few years, my fifth grade students have buddied up with Kathleen’s first graders for buddy reading. Purportedly it is so that the fifth graders can help the little kids with their reading. They sit elbow to elbow, side by side and share a book of the first graders choosing. We encourage the fifth graders to support the first graders as they read, but often they end up reading to them.
Funny thing though,, so much more happens then just reading. Watching the first graders lean in, head on the shoulder of the older child, smiling, enjoying the story. Both students hand in hand as they find a place under the tree in the courtyard.
It would be easy to think that the first graders were the ones to gain the most from this experience, but watching my fifth graders, it is at least equal. For example, take the most competitive, over the top boy in my class. He is always moving, a huge football fan and Pop Warner star. He ended up being buddies with a first grader that is sensitive and quick to become upset. Watching the tenderness and caring that my student shows to his buddy is the most endearing and special moment of the week. He slows down, is patient and always encouraging and praising. For those 20 minutes at the end of the week, my student shows the tremendous person that is developing inside him. The smile and joy that shows on that first grader’s face will always stay with me.
We end our time together by showing our gratitude to each other. Instead of just saying goodbye, the students choose from a high five, fist bump, elbow knock or hug to thank each other for giving time and attention.
Expression of choice, hug.
