As we started our new unit on The American Revolution, some interesting discussions evolved as we brainstormed our way through some pre-thinking. The students became aware of the colonists dislike of taxes, especially when they had no say in how they were raised.
One student spoke up and said, "Wait, I heard my mom talking about taxes the other day and she didn't like what they were being spent on." Almost 250 years later, and here we are on the same topics.
Another student asked why the government couldn't just print out more money to pay for things. That led into a great discussion about inflation and the devaluing of the dollar.
Check in with your child, have a discussion about money, taxes and representation!
